1) THE NEWS

The bad

Thai authorities are warning the public about a surge in AI voice scams, where criminals use artificial intelligence to mimic the voices of family members or friends, creating fake emergencies to trick victims into transferring money. Officials urge everyone to verify suspicious calls and never rush into sending funds.

The Surprising

Meta has introduced new AI-powered voice features to WhatsApp Business, making it easier for companies to interact with customers. Businesses can now use AI to automate responses, provide personalized support, and handle inquiries more efficiently, enhancing customer service and streamlining communication directly through the popular messaging app.

The Good

Dr. Alec Cooper, a Quebec physician with ALS, uses AI voice cloning to preserve his natural speech. This technology allows ALS patients to communicate authentically, maintaining identity and emotional connection as their disease progresses, and offers new hope for quality of life and legacy.

2) THE COOL TOOL

Daily :

Why do we like Daily : think of Daily as Open AI chat mode with a web page attached to it, Daily not only call you and guide you it takes into consideration what you say and turn it into actionable items (to do, calendar, notes !) and cherry on top of the cake, if you can’t speak you can still type thanks to a Whatsapp integration.

Calling clones

Calling Clones uses advanced AI voice cloning technology to create a digital twin of your voice, enabling you to engage in self-talk and reflection by making calls as yourself. Rather than functioning as a traditional app, Calling Clones is described as a ritual, a unique experiment blending neural voice synthesis, emotional clarity, and a touch of sci-fi. Users can clone their voice and schedule calls with their digital twin, fostering self-reflection, personal growth, and accountability.

Why do we Like Coach Clone: well it’s the creativity and fun aspect of it that makes us think that Javie Fandos deserve the award of coolitude ! From the script to the design and edition, the video below is a masterpiece of fun !

3) THE FOUNDER SPOTLIGHT

So Lachlan came as an evidence when we were thinking about a our first founder spotlight.

⁠⁠How did you ends up in voice?

LLMs finally mean we can interface with computers in our own language, and voice is the pinnacle of this. It is the natural form of expressing ideas which allow us to capture more information more readily. I was playing around with some ideas towards the end of 2024 and the voice experience just clicked. You could finally have a conversation that felt (almost) natural. At the time I was working on a next-gen journaling app, but the vision has expanded much further into using voice as the easiest way of extracting information from your thoughts. If / until neural interfaces are cheap and reliable, this will remain so. Even if they surpass all expectation, articulating your thoughts verbally forces you to consider and judge them. For me, that’s what’s so special about voice.

⁠What’s your struggle or moment of joy with voice

Transcription still isn’t great, especially for non-American accents. Speech-to-speech models seem inevitable, but for now the lack of flexibility keeps me away. STT models are the weakest part of the pipeline. Misinterpreting what the user said is very poor UX and feels very 2015 Alexa vibes.

⁠⁠Where do you think voice is going

Currently I find a division between speech models in demo scenarios and the voices I can test with my product. This will close, and it will become incredibly difficult to tell if we are speaking to an AI or a human. This could be problematic. Some might say we are already there, and so the sooner we solve problems of verifying humans the better. If I’m optimistic, I think we will all use voice as our primary mode of interaction within a few years. The repercussions this has on our shared spaces (already corrupted by endless “quick calls”) is troubling. A world in which everyone talks into noise cancelling headphones seems to me rather dull. As with all things, we must learn to use them for the better.

  With a good friend we start planning what could be one of the coolest Gen AI events (I’m an event manager by trade… I got a good sens of what is a boring event and an actual goooood one ! feel free to reach out if you want to get involved :)
