The Good
 
A UC Davis neuroscientist just won the 2026 Chen Institute and Science Prize for turning brain signals back into speech.

Sergey Stavisky's team built an implant and AI pipeline that let a man with ALS, who'd lost the ability to speak, generate fluent sentences again, first as text, then as synthetic speech modeled on his own pre-ALS voice.

Two years in, he's produced 2.7 million words at better than 99% accuracy. He's also back working full-time in climate advocacy, on video calls and writing to colleagues, using only his brain signals. The system picks up enough of his intonation that he can sing through it.
 
 

Why we like it:
There's a lot of voice AI news about cloning and misuse right now. This one's just a guy getting his voice back and his job and his family conversations along with it. We thought this was pretty heartfelt.
 
 
The Bad
 
A federal court sent former NPR host David Greene's AI-voice lawsuit against Google back to state court. Greene says Google's NotebookLM "Audio Overviews" feature uses a male voice that copies his delivery and cadence from years on Morning Edition, without his permission. Google argued the case really belonged in federal court under copyright law. The judge disagreed: Greene's claims are about what the AI outputs, not what it was trained on, so his right-of-publicity claim can go ahead under state law. Google maintains the voice belongs to a paid actor who has nothing to do with Greene.
 
 

Why we're flagging it:
The procedural detail is the real story here. Courts are starting to separate "what does the voice sound like" from "how was the model built," and that distinction is going to matter a lot more than this one lawsuit. Keep an eye on it.
 
 
The Funky
 
Hinge's founder just raised $18M to build a dating company that insists it isn't a dating app. It's built around voice instead.

Justin McLeod, who stepped down as Hinge CEO last year, is launching Overtone with backing from Match Group (Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid's parent company), FirstMark Capital, and Pace Capital. No profiles, no swiping, no feed. Overtone gets to know each person "in their own voice," then makes a handful of curated introductions and explains why it made them.

Relationship expert Esther Perel joined the board. It launches later this year, in select cities.
 
 

Why we like it:
The guy who built the swipe-first playbook is betting against it now, and voice is how he's doing it. Not AI writing your opening line for you. AI actually listening to you talk about yourself, then making the call. Whether it works is a different question, but it's a genuinely different bet on what voice can do in a product than the usual "AI wingman" pitch.

Flowtica Scribe

Scribe looks and writes like a normal gel pen, but it records your meetings while you take notes by hand. Flowtica transcribes and summarizes everything, makes every session searchable in plain language, and lets you ask questions about past meetings ("what did we decide about pricing?"). Handwritten notes and whiteboard shots come in through your phone camera and get merged with the audio context. Recordings are encrypted on the device and never used to train third-party AI. Born on Kickstarter, it won a CES Innovation Award this year, and the pen costs $149 with a free software tier to start.

Why we like it:
There are a few reasons. Pens have been an important part of our lives. We have written love letters with them, chewed on them, and got our fingers dirty because of them. Some predict voice tech may announce the end of handwriting; we hope that never happens, so seeing voice AI integrated into something this personal makes us happy.

And while a lot of new voice hardware is exciting, this one stands out because it is not trying to be one more thing to carry. It improves something that already exists.

Their landing page opens with a question for the ages: "What do climate change, wealth concentration, and your flabby arms have in common?" The answer is CrankGPT: a fully local, fully private AI that runs on a Raspberry Pi and is powered by you, turning a hand crank. No wall socket, no Wi-Fi, no data center. Just you, cranking, asking a question out loud, and a small language model answering. There is even a button on the site that says "Is this real?" and honestly, fair.

And yes, it is a voice agent. You talk to it and it talks back, running a small model entirely on-device through a microphone hat. Our favorite detail: when the model is thinking, the crank literally gets harder to turn. It is the first AI product where you can feel the compute in your biceps.

Why we like it:
it is satire you can build (~$300 in parts, plans being published, voice agent already on GitHub), and satire with a point. While the industry measures itself in gigawatts, two ex-Googlers built an AI whose entire energy bill is your arm, and called it "rightsizing AI: use the appropriate tool for the job." That is the ecology message we wish more of the industry would say out loud: not every question needs a data center. A funny project, an early-stage crazy idea, out of the box, and acting for the good. Basically our whole editorial compass in one hand crank.

A year ago James flew in from San Francisco to speak at one of our first events, at the Google office in London. He is one of the nicest people in this industry. With his co-founder Daniel Gauci he is tackling something we believe is essential to the well-being of the whole ecosystem: agent observability. Voice agents will only earn real trust if someone makes sure they do not lose their heads mid-call, or at least tells you the moment they do. That is the job Roark (YC Winter 2025) has taken on.

So we asked this ex-AngelList engineer turned YC founder our usual three questions to understand the path that led him to voice agent testing.

How did you end up in voice?
Daniel and I started Roark because we were building voice agents ourselves and quickly realized we were flying blind. Every time we changed a prompt, model, or part of the call flow, we had no reliable way to know whether the agent had improved or broken. The only option was to call it manually, sometimes hundreds of times and listen through the results. That pain became Roark. We initially focused on analytics for live voice-agent calls, then quickly expanded into automated testing and simulations. We joined Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, and it has been a whirlwind ever since. Today, Roark has processed millions of minutes across live call monitoring and simulations, and is used by teams at organizations including BCG, Spectrum, Podium, and many others building serious voice AI products.

What's your struggle or moment of joy with voice?
The biggest challenge was accepting that voice agents cannot be tested like normal software. You can test an API by checking whether it returns the right value. A voice agent might complete the task and still interrupt the caller, misunderstand their intent, sound unnatural, ignore a policy, or take ten seconds to respond. Our breakthrough was realizing that testing had to happen at the conversation level. Instead of checking a handful of fixed outputs, Roark simulates complete calls across hundreds or thousands of scenarios and measures what actually matters: whether the agent followed the flow, handled interruptions, responded quickly, stayed compliant, and gave the caller a good experience. That changed Roark from an analytics product into the testing and quality platform we wished had existed when we were building voice agents ourselves.

Where do you think voice is going?
Voice AI is moving from demos to real infrastructure. These agents are already answering support calls, qualifying leads, booking appointments, collecting payments, and handling conversations that directly affect customers and businesses. Soon, calling an AI agent will feel completely normal. But the industry will only reach that scale if teams can trust what their agents are doing. Our vision is for every voice-agent interaction, simulated or live to be automatically tested, measured, and improved. Teams should know when a release introduces a regression, where conversations are failing, and what needs to change without manually listening to thousands of calls. We want Roark to become the quality layer behind the voice AI industry: the system that helps teams ship faster without sacrificing reliability, safety, or customer experience.
